Welcome to the Precious project website

Introduction

The Precious project is supported by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK, which has the simple aim to accelerate economic growth by stimulating and supporting business-led innovation.  The area that the Precious project falls under focuses specifically on increasing the competitiveness of UK jewellery manufacturing by offering a viable alternative for suppliers at the middle/high end of the bespoke and personalised jewellery market.

Our mission:

To demonstrate the viability of precious metal additive manufacturing within the UK Jewellery industry from design and manufacturing through to finishing, polishing and retail.

Our objectives:

  • To produce high quality finished parts using best practice AM technology as the manufacturing process.
  • To facilitate this, the team is designing demonstration parts to take full advantage of the flexibility that AM has to offer.
  • These designs are processed with our newly developed robust AM preparation software which produces effective, material minimised support structures. This results in the production of high quality as-manufactured parts.
  • Finally, the project goes on to evaluate and categorise different mechanical finishing and polishing techniques as they apply to a variety of complex geometry gold jewellery parts.

Partners:

UK Partners5 UK partners, along the jewellery supply chain, are combining their expertise, creativity and knowledge to explore the potential viability of AM in the jewellery industry. Their cooperation will help overcome some of the current challenges to AM while demonstrating the possibilities of the technology for stimulating economic growth in the sector.
